Alphagan

by AbbVie (Allergan)

Alphagan (brimonidine eye drops) can cost $150–$300/month without coverage. AbbVie's Allergan patient assistance program offers free Alphagan for qualifying glaucoma patients.

Alphagan P (brimonidine tartrate 0.1% or 0.15%) is a prescription eye drop made by AbbVie (through Allergan). It belongs to a class called alpha-2 adrenergic agonists and lowers intraocular pressure (IOP) through a dual mechanism — both reducing fluid production and increasing drainage.

Without insurance, Alphagan can cost $150–$300 per month. AbbVie's patient assistance program through Allergan provides access for qualifying uninsured patients.

How to Afford Alphagan

  • Uninsured patients who meet income requirements may receive Alphagan at no cost through AbbVie's Allergan Patient Assistance Program.
  • Commercially insured patients can lower their copay with the Alphagan Savings Card.

ClariMeds will determine which free program for Alphagan fits your situation and handles the enrollment paperwork.

What Does Alphagan Treat?

Alphagan is FDA-approved to lower elevated intraocular pressure (IOP) in patients with:

  • Open-angle glaucoma — the most common type of glaucoma
  • Ocular hypertension — high eye pressure without other signs of glaucoma

Alphagan is often used in combination with other IOP-lowering drops (such as beta-blockers or prostaglandins) when a single medication is insufficient to control pressure adequately.

How Alphagan Works

Brimonidine stimulates alpha-2 adrenergic receptors in the eye, triggering two separate IOP-lowering effects: it reduces the production of aqueous humor (the fluid that fills the front of the eye) and increases the outflow of aqueous humor through the uveoscleral pathway. This dual action makes it effective across a range of patients. Alphagan P uses a purite preservative system that is gentler on the ocular surface than older formulations — an advantage for patients with sensitive eyes who use multiple eye drops.
