Imbruvica
by Johnson & Johnson
Imbruvica (ibrutinib) can cost $180,000+ per year without coverage. Free Imbruvica programs are available through both AbbVie and Johnson & Johnson for qualifying patients. Learn how to afford Imbruvica.
Imbruvica (ibrutinib) is a targeted oral cancer therapy co-developed and marketed by AbbVie and Johnson & Johnson (Janssen). It belongs to a class of drugs called BTK inhibitors (Bruton's tyrosine kinase inhibitors), which work by blocking a key enzyme that blood cancer cells rely on to survive and spread.
Without insurance, Imbruvica can cost more than $180,000 per year — one of the highest price tags for any oral cancer drug. Because it is co-marketed by two manufacturers, patients have access to assistance programs from both companies.
How to Afford Imbruvica
- Uninsured patients may qualify for free Imbruvica through either myAbbVie Assist (AbbVie's PAP) or Janssen CarePath Patient Assistance Program (J&J's PAP).
- Commercially insured patients can use the Imbruvica Savings Card to reduce copay costs.
- Medicare patients facing high out-of-pocket costs may qualify for Extra Help (LIS) and potentially the manufacturers' PAPs depending on income.
ClariMeds evaluates both programs simultaneously and applies to whichever provides the most coverage for your situation.
What Does Imbruvica Treat?
Imbruvica is FDA-approved for:
- Chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) and small lymphocytic lymphoma (SLL)
- Mantle cell lymphoma (MCL) in patients who have received at least one prior therapy
- Waldenström's macroglobulinemia (a rare type of non-Hodgkin lymphoma)
- Marginal zone lymphoma (MZL) in patients who need systemic therapy and have received anti-CD20 therapy
- Chronic graft-versus-host disease (cGVHD) after failure of one or more lines of systemic therapy
How Imbruvica Works
BTK (Bruton's tyrosine kinase) is an enzyme that is essential for the survival, proliferation, and spread of certain B-cell malignancies. By forming a covalent bond with BTK and permanently inactivating it, Imbruvica cuts off a critical survival signal in cancer cells — causing them to stop dividing and die. As an oral pill taken once daily, Imbruvica replaced intravenous chemotherapy regimens for many blood cancer patients, dramatically improving convenience and quality of life.
