Lumigan

by AbbVie (Allergan)

Lumigan (bimatoprost eye drops) can cost $200–$400/month without coverage. AbbVie's Allergan patient assistance program offers free Lumigan for qualifying glaucoma patients.

Lumigan (bimatoprost 0.01%) is a prescription eye drop made by AbbVie (through Allergan). It belongs to a class called prostaglandin analogs and is one of the most widely used treatments for lowering intraocular pressure (IOP) in glaucoma.

Without insurance, Lumigan can cost $200–$400 per month. AbbVie's Allergan patient assistance program helps qualifying patients access Lumigan at reduced or no cost.

How to Afford Lumigan

  • Uninsured patients who meet income requirements may receive Lumigan at no cost through AbbVie's Allergan Patient Assistance Program.
  • Commercially insured patients can lower their copay with the Lumigan Savings Card.

ClariMeds identifies the right free program for Lumigan and submits your enrollment at no cost to you.

What Does Lumigan Treat?

Lumigan is FDA-approved to reduce elevated intraocular pressure (IOP) in patients with:

  • Open-angle glaucoma — the most common form of glaucoma, in which the eye's drainage system becomes less efficient over time, leading to elevated pressure that can damage the optic nerve
  • Ocular hypertension — elevated eye pressure without other signs of glaucoma, which increases the risk of developing glaucoma

Lowering IOP is the primary strategy for slowing or preventing vision loss in glaucoma. Lumigan is typically used once daily in the evening.

How Lumigan Works

Prostaglandins are lipid compounds that regulate various body functions, including fluid drainage in the eye. Bimatoprost mimics naturally occurring prostaglandins and increases the outflow of aqueous humor (the fluid inside the eye) through the uveoscleral pathway — an alternative drainage route in the eye. This increased drainage reduces the buildup of fluid and lowers intraocular pressure. Lumigan is one of the most potent IOP-lowering eye drops available and is often the first-line treatment for glaucoma.
