Qulipta (atogepant) is a once-daily oral pill made by AbbVie for the preventive treatment of migraines. It belongs to a newer class of migraine drugs called gepants — CGRP (calcitonin gene-related peptide) receptor antagonists that block a key pain-signaling molecule involved in migraines.

Without insurance, Qulipta can cost $800–$900 per month. AbbVie provides assistance programs for qualifying patients.

What Does Qulipta Treat?

Qulipta is FDA-approved for:

  • Episodic migraine prevention in adults — for patients with up to 14 migraine days per month
  • Chronic migraine prevention in adults — for patients with 15 or more headache days per month (at least 8 of which are migraines)

Qulipta is a preventive medication taken every day regardless of whether a migraine is occurring, not a treatment for acute migraine attacks in progress.

How Qulipta Works

CGRP is a neuropeptide released during migraine attacks that dilates blood vessels and transmits pain signals. Qulipta is a small molecule that binds to the CGRP receptor and blocks CGRP from docking — preventing the downstream cascade that leads to migraine pain. Because it is an oral pill (rather than a monthly injection like the anti-CGRP antibodies), Qulipta is particularly convenient for patients who prefer not to self-inject. Clinical trials showed Qulipta reduced monthly migraine days by up to 4–6 days compared to placebo.
