Restasis
by AbbVie (Allergan)
Restasis (cyclosporine eye drops) can cost $500–$700/month without coverage. AbbVie's Allergan patient assistance program offers free Restasis for qualifying patients with chronic dry eye.
Restasis (cyclosporine ophthalmic emulsion 0.05%) is a prescription eye drop made by AbbVie (through its Allergan subsidiary). It is an ophthalmic immunomodulator — an anti-inflammatory treatment that works locally in the eye to treat the underlying immune-related inflammation that causes chronic dry eye disease.
Without insurance, Restasis can cost $500–$700 per month. AbbVie's Allergan division offers patient assistance programs for those who qualify.
How to Afford Restasis
- Uninsured patients who meet income requirements may receive Restasis at no cost through AbbVie's Allergan Patient Assistance Program.
- Commercially insured patients can lower their copay with the Restasis Savings Card.
ClariMeds identifies the right free program for Restasis and handles the enrollment paperwork on your behalf.
What Does Restasis Treat?
Restasis is FDA-approved to increase tear production in patients whose tear production is thought to be suppressed due to ocular inflammation associated with chronic dry eye disease (keratoconjunctivitis sicca). It is the first prescription eye drop approved specifically for this indication and is used twice daily. Restasis addresses the root cause of inflammatory dry eye rather than simply lubricating the surface.
How Restasis Works
In chronic dry eye, the immune system triggers persistent low-grade inflammation in the lacrimal glands (tear-producing glands), which reduces their ability to secrete tears. Cyclosporine, the active ingredient in Restasis, inhibits calcineurin — a protein that T-lymphocytes (immune cells) need to activate and release inflammatory cytokines. By suppressing T-cell activity locally in the eye, Restasis reduces the inflammation suppressing tear gland function, allowing tear production to recover over time. Improvement typically develops over 3–6 months of consistent use.
