Xifaxan is used to treat irritable bowel syndrome with diarrhea (IBS-D) as well as the diarrhea often referred to as “traveler’s diarrhea,” which is caused by E. coli bacteria. It is important to note that Xifaxan is not intended to treat diarrhea caused by viral infections like colds or flu.

Xifaxan is a fairly expensive antibiotic that is effective at stopping the growth of the bacteria that causes gastric infections and the associated abdominal pain and diarrhea. A two-week treatment period can provide symptomatic relief of IBS-D for an average of 10 weeks, and possibly up to 24 weeks. As with all antibiotics, it is important to take this medication exactly as prescribed, completing the full course of treatment without interruption.

Xifaxan is also prescribed to treat hepatic encephalopathy, a brain disorder associated with advanced liver disease.
